After 19 days of blind bidding and a record haul of over $19.5 billion the telecom industry anticipates the conclusion of this watershed spectrum event.Clearly this most recent 700 MHz auction is the FCC's signature success of all time financially. Opinions vary as to whether or not the auction rules actually maximized the potential revenue from the auction. Some question whether or not rules that fixed bidders into bidding only for certain types and sizes of licenses may have abrogated some shifting strategies by carriers that could have resulted in more revenue to the FCC. In any event, this is a big piece of spectrum pie. And perhaps the last big piece of spectrum pie left out there for commercial services. One question I have is whether or not the FCC will, in its ecstasy over the success of this event, try to find some more spectrum to auction in order to get that special feeling back. But where would the spectrum come from? I for one, am not sure; thoughts anyone?
